Additional information: The Pediatric Chronic Pain and Mind-Body Medicine Program is an outpatient clinic at McMaster Children’s Hospital. The program has 2 pathways. In the Pain Pathway children and teenagers are assessed who have complex or persistent pain that is getting in the way of their ability to participate in meaningful activities such as school, sports, or spending time with family and friends. Our program focuses on teaching youth skills to manage pain, in addition to helping families learn to help their child or youth manage their pain more effectively. Many patients referred to our program have underlying painful conditions (such as arthritis or inflammatory bowel disease) and need help coping with their symptoms. Other patients are living with Chronic Primary Pain – in which no underlying condition is present. Our team works to help children and youth get back to what is important to them. In the Mind-Body Pathway we assess children and youth who are struggling with somatic symptoms that are getting in the way of function and well-being. The programs accepts referrals for conditions such as Functional Neurologic Symptom Disorder (FNSD), Somatic Symptom Disorder or other mind-body conditions that might include chronic nausea, chronic dizziness, irritable bowel symptoms or chronic fatigue.
