About this medication

  • Nystatin is an antifungal medicine used to treat infections caused by a yeast called Candida.
  • The oral liquid form treats yeast infections of the mouth, throat, and gut.
  • The vaginal cream treats vaginal yeast infections.
  • The skin cream and ointment treat yeast infections on the skin.

Treats Candida infection in the mouth.

How to use it

  • If you use the oral liquid: shake the bottle well before every use. Take it exactly as your healthcare professional tells you, and the amount and how often you take it will be on your prescription label. For a mouth infection, swish the liquid around your mouth and hold it there as long as you comfortably can before swallowing.
  • If you use the vaginal cream: insert the cream using the applicator provided, usually at bedtime, exactly as directed on your prescription label.
  • If you use the skin cream or ointment: apply a generous layer to the affected skin as directed on your prescription label, and gently rub it in.
  • You can take the oral liquid with or without food. It may be mixed into milk, formula, or a non-acidic food like honey or jelly if that makes it easier to take, especially for babies and young children.
  • Keep using this medicine for the full length of time your healthcare professional recommends, even after your symptoms improve, to help stop the infection from coming back.

If you miss a dose

  • If you miss a dose of the oral liquid, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose, in which case you should skip the missed dose and continue as normal. Do not take two doses at once.
  • If you miss an application of the vaginal cream or skin cream or ointment, apply it as soon as you remember and continue your regular schedule.

Shake well, measure the prescribed dose and keep it in contact with affected areas before swallowing as directed. Complete the course, usually continuing after symptoms resolve.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

  • Nystatin has not been shown to harm a developing baby in human studies, but tell your healthcare professional if you are pregnant.
  • If you are pregnant, use the vaginal cream only if your healthcare professional advises it.
  • Nystatin is generally considered fine to use while breastfeeding, but tell your healthcare professional you are nursing.

Very little is absorbed; pregnancy, breastfeeding and infant dosing should still be reviewed individually.

Before you use it

  • Tell your healthcare professional or another healthcare professional if you have ever had an allergic reaction to nystatin or any similar medicine.
  • Tell your healthcare professional if you are pregnant, might be pregnant, or are breastfeeding, especially before using the vaginal cream.
  • If you wear dentures and have a mouth yeast infection, tell the Care365 care team, since your dentures may also need special cleaning.

Important warnings

  • Nystatin is a very safe medicine that stays mostly in the area where it is applied and is not well absorbed into the rest of the body.
  • Stop using the vaginal cream, skin cream, or ointment and contact your healthcare professional if the area becomes more irritated, red, or sore after starting treatment.

Do not substitute skin or vaginal preparations. Avoid nystatin allergy.

Possible side effects

  • Feeling sick to your stomach, throwing up, loose stools, or stomach cramps, mainly with the oral liquid at higher doses
  • Itching, burning, or irritation where the vaginal cream or skin cream or ointment is applied

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and mouth irritation.

When to get help

When to get emergency help

  • Get emergency help if you develop hives, swelling of the face or throat, or sudden difficulty breathing after using this medicine.
  • Get emergency help if you notice a fast or pounding heartbeat along with other allergy symptoms after using this medicine.

When to contact a healthcare professional

  • Contact your healthcare professional if the area you are treating becomes more irritated instead of improving.
  • Contact your healthcare professional if your symptoms have not improved after using this medicine as directed.
  • Contact your healthcare professional if you develop widespread muscle aches or wheezing while using this medicine.

Seek help for hives, facial swelling, wheezing or persistent symptoms.

Other medicines and products

  • The oral liquid can be taken with or without food.
  • Nystatin does not have any well-known interactions with other medicines because it stays mostly where it is applied.
  • If you use the vaginal cream, know that its oil-based ingredients can weaken latex condoms and diaphragms, so use a backup method of birth control or protection during treatment.
  • Try not to apply other creams or products to the same area at the same time as your nystatin cream or ointment, since this can make it less effective.

Systemic interactions are uncommon; discuss other oral treatments and denture care.

Missed doses, storage and accidental exposure

  • Store the oral liquid, vaginal cream, skin cream, and ointment at room temperature, between 15°C and 30°C.
  • Do not use the oral liquid more than 30 days after first opening the bottle; keep it tightly closed and away from light.
  • Keep all forms of this medicine out of reach of children.
  • Return unused or expired medicine to your pharmacy for safe disposal.

Follow your own product’s missed-dose instructions. If you are unsure, ask the Care365 clinical team before taking an extra dose. Contraceptives, injections and modified-release medicines may need a specific plan.

Keep the original packaging and follow its storage, expiry and disposal instructions. Keep medicines away from children and pets. Ask about refrigeration, after-opening limits and safe sharps disposal when relevant.

For suspected overdose or accidental swallowing, contact poison control or urgent medical care promptly. Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, collapse or a seizure.

Key points to remember

  • Finish the full course of treatment, even if you start feeling better, to help fully clear the infection.
  • If you use the vaginal cream, avoid unprotected sex during treatment to help prevent reinfection, and it is safe to continue treatment during your period if needed.
  • If you wear dentures, ask the Care365 care team about how to clean them properly to help clear a mouth yeast infection.
