Because the consequences of delaying treatment — infertility, ectopic pregnancy, chronic pelvic pain — are serious, treatment is started on clinical suspicion, with testing done alongside rather than before treatment.
When would I need to go to the hospital instead?
If you're pregnant or could be, can't tolerate food or fluids by mouth, have severe or uncontrolled symptoms, or have a fever together with vomiting, in-person or hospital-level care is needed rather than outpatient antibiotics.
Do my partners need treatment too?
Yes — all partners from the last 60 days are referred for empiric treatment as well, regardless of whether they have symptoms, to prevent reinfection.
How long do I need to avoid sex?
You'll be asked to abstain from sex for 7 days after starting treatment, and until you and all treated partners have completed therapy and are symptom-free.
What if I recently had an IUD inserted?
A recent IUD insertion or gynecologic procedure is a specific reason to add extra antibiotic coverage (metronidazole) — and if you currently have an IUD in place, it's only removed after you've had at least 2 doses of treatment.
